James Harold "Jimmy" Doolittle (December 14, 1896 – September 27, 1993) was an American military general and aviation pioneer who received the Medal of Honor for his daring raids on Japan during World War II. He also made early coast-to-coast flights, won many flying races, and helped develop instrument flying. Born on June 7, 1919 in Lockport Township, Illinois, west of Joliet. Jim graduated from high school in 1937, and enrolled in Morton Junior College in Harvey, Illinois. He then headed west to Cheyenne, Wyoming and worked for United Airlines. It was there that he first learned to fly.
